POTEET, Texas (WOAI/KABB) — Police in Texas removed over 30 malnourished dogs Wednesday from a property just north of Poteet.
The Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office hosted a news conference at the property where several dogs were visibly chained in place, living amongst trash.
Atascosa County Sheriff Henry Dominguez said that after a report of animal abuse at the property, officers investigated the property and obtained a warrant to seize the dogs.
“All of the animals are chained to some object. They do have shelter, and they do have water. The food situation is what concerns me because there is no food on the property that I can see," Dominguez said. The owner of the animals, Patricia Stone, a self-described “animal rescuer,” has been allegedly squatting at the property with the dogs. Given the condition of the dogs, authorities estimate that the dogs have been in her custody for a short period.
Stone will have the opportunity to contest the alleged abuse before a judge and have her animals returned.
The dogs were seized from the property and taken to a vet for evaluation. From there, they will be cared for by animal services while court proceedings commence.
If Stone is found guilty, the dogs will be available for adoption or handed over to other organizations to care for them.
